Rules and
regulations (Click to view)
Waiver of
liability (Click to view)
Here are
some rules and pointers to keep in
mind when preparing for horseback
riding lessons:
1. Only the
lesson participant is allowed in the
horse stalls and in the arena at
Showtime! Parents and friends must
stay either in the office or in the
alleyways. No exceptions unless
given specific permission by the
lesson instructor. Not all the
horses at Showtime are used in
lessons. We have carefully chosen
our lesson horses to make sure they
are good “teachers.” Many of the
horses at Showtime are privately
owned, and some are very high-energy
show horses. We also have stallions
on the premises. Do not open any
stall door or go into a stall
without specific permission of your
lesson instructor!
2. A safety helmet is required for
all lesson participants under 18
years old, and strongly recommended
for lesson participants over 18. If
you do not have a well-fitting
helmet, we can loan one to you on a
short term basis, but if you plan to
continue lessons, then we ask that
you buy one. There are several local
resources for helmets: The Family
Center in Harrisonville, Tractor
Supply in Lee’s Summit or
Fletcher’s J Bar S on 40 Hwy in
Blue Springs are only a few of many
local resources, or you can order
online from Schneiders Saddlery
(www.sstack.com ), State Line Tack
(www.statelinetack.com ) or Dover
Saddlery (www.doversaddlery.com )
There are lots of decorative helmets
on the market, but safety is of the
utmost importance. Please make sure
that the helmet you buy meets
ASTM/SEI standards. Helmets must fit
well and all retention straps must
be securely fastened. When properly
fastened, they should not fall
forward over the eyes.
3. Please wear long pants. Any well
fitted long pant is acceptable.
Jeans are OK. Shorts and short pants
or capris are not allowed. In
winter, please be sure to wear a
jacket and gloves appropriate to the
weather, as the barn is not heated.
4. Boots boots boots! Sneakers are
not allowed. The boot should come up
over the ankle, and have a smooth
sole with a low heel, so that your
foot cannot get caught in the
stirrup in an emergency. Boots can
be lace-up, zippered, or pull-on
style. Lug soles (such as on hiking
boots) should not be worn. A wide
variety of correct boots can be
bought at any of the sources listed
in #1 above.
5. Showtime loves kids but we are
not a day care center. If dropping
your child for a lesson, please pick
your him/her up promptly at the end
of the lesson, unless you have made
other arrangements in advance with
your lesson instructor.
6. Showtime T-shirts in youth and
adult sizes are available for
purchase at $15. each- please see
your lesson instructor if you would
like to buy one.
7. Last, but definitely not least,
if you have ANY questions, concerns,
or comments, please contact the Barn
Manager, Leigh Anne Romans. She can
usually be found around the barn
during the days and early evenings,
or you can call her at (816)
678-5807. No question, concern, or
comment is too trivial to discuss
with Leigh Anne. We want to make
sure that your experience at
Showtime is a positive one.
Here is a short bio about
one of our lesson instructors, Sarah
Dyer:
I am a graduate of William Woods University with a BS in Equestrian Science, and have had over 20 years of experience in the horse business. I waited to get my degree
for a few years, and then worked
part time as I started my degree,
later moving to Fulton, MO to finish
it up full time at that wonderful
college. I specialized in
equitation, horsemanship, pleasure
driving, HUS and Western Pleasure in
college.
As a kid, I grew up in the city, but
with a country girl's heart. I was
horse crazy from as far back as I
can remember, but my situation
didn't make it easy to do anything
with horses besides take lessons. So
lessons it was, and for many years I
rode several times a week at a
Hunter/Jumper barn in Colorado. When
I moved to Missouri, I took lessons
with Bev Cathcart at Hidden Valley
Farm, riding there for 7 years.
Finally I realized that I wanted to
be a coach and lesson instructor, to
give other city kids like me a
chance to hang out with horses. So
off I went, finding a great college
in Missouri that is very well known
for its achievements in the
Equestrian field.
I have shown many different types of
horses. I have several champion and
reserve champion ribbons in
Hunter/Jumper and Saddle-type
Pleasure Driving, and top 3 placings
in many, many circuit and local
shows. I also am the Pinto
Association National Congress
Champion in Stock-type Pleasure
Driving for Amateurs, and Reserve in
Open Driving.
In school, my major emphasis was
teaching other students- student
teaching while in school, and
teaching lessons at a small barn in
KC for the last several years. I
enjoy teaching and coaching, and
since graduation I have done my fair
share of coaching, as well as while
interning during the summers.
Teaching and Coaching are my thing!

Here
is a short bio about one of our
lesson instructors, Kaitlin Short
I
graduated in May from
William Woods University
with a Bachelor of Science
in Equine Science and a
Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology. While horses
have always been my biggest
passion, I strive to
understand the innerworkings
of personality and
motivation, and I feel that
my additional background in
psychology has made me a
stronger and more aware
teacher of kids and horses
alike. I have ridden saddle
seat for almost 10 years,
and specialized in saddle
seat in college. I started
riding when I was 8 with Bev
Cathcard at Hidden Valley
Farm. I got a Longview
Horsemanship Camp form for
Christmas in the hopes that
it would satisfy my love for
ponies; I rode for 6 weeks,
fell even more in love,
started taking regular
lessons, and never looked
back!
I rode with Bev Cathcard for
8 years before Hidden Valley
closed, tried a couple local
barns for a few months, and
finally settled at Showtime
as a junior in high school,
where I helped Leigh Anne
build a very new lesson
program. We all did our best
to manage the lesson program
while I was at school and I
came back and taught over
Christmas and summer breaks,
but by the time I was a
sophomore the program was
too large and a full-time
instructor was hired. After
a couple years "hiatus" from
Showtime where I studied
hard at school, rode in
several shows, and interned
for a summer at R and R
Stables, I'm glad to be back
home!
While saddle seat is my main
concentration, I've also
taken classes in western and
dressage while at school,
and have competed in both.
I've shown at several highly
acclaimed shows in saddle
seat with many top-5
placings, including the
American Royal. I competed
both with the Show Pleasure
horse I owned in high school
and on a 5-Gaited saddlebred
from school, where I
received second place in the
Mo-Kan 5-Gaited Show
Pleasure class and top 5 in
the national ASB 5-Gaited
Show Pleasure class 18-38. I
enjoy all aspects of
teaching and training and
exposing students to the
thrill of saddle seat, and I
can't wait to meet all the
new faces at Showtime! |
